To me, this poem is talking about childhood and what it means to the author. It is describing the freedom and wonderfulness of being a child during the summertime. It talks about how unicorns were still possible and knees were meant to be skinned. As a child, many people imagine that such creatures as the unicorn did exist, and many children scrape their knees as they play around with their friends. It also mentions that the summer “may never have been at all”, but it has “become more real than the one that was”. To me, this means that the author may have just imagined all of the fun times he or she had, but those “memories” have become more real than the memories of what has actually happened. From my past, this actually reminds me of some of the books I used to read as a young child. I loved reading fantasy and reading about imaginary things, and this poem reminds me of those things. I never was one to skin my knees much, but the kids I read about would skin their knees all the time. When I would read, I would visualize myself in the book with the characters. The memories of the books I read during the summers, though they never really existed, have become real to me.

Is adding fluoride to drinking water a bad idea? Some people seem to think so. Some people say that fluoride is toxic, causes cancer, and increases the risk in elderly people to get hip fractures; and therefore it should not be added to water. However, others point out that almost anything can be toxic if ingested in large quantities, and as for their other claims, they do not have any scientific research to back up what they say.
Fluoride is already used in almost all toothpastes, and has been since the 1960’s. Before adding fluoride to toothpaste, though, people had to figure out exactly how much fluoride to add to the toothpaste to protect the teeth without causing dental fluorosis, a discoloration of the teeth. Also, they had to find an abrasive that was compatible with fluoride, which there are now three of.
One side effect that every site I visited seemed to have something to say about was dental fluorosis. Dental fluorosis is caused by too much fluoride while the teeth are forming, resulting in a discoloration in the teeth. However, even with this side effect, teeth still are more resistant to decay than they would be without any fluoride at all.
All in all, I must say that fluoridating drinking water sounds like a good idea to me. I think that the benefits greatly outweigh the risks. Ever since fluoride has been added to toothpaste, the amount of tooth decay across the country has decreased, and I wholly support it.
